OTB Skins 50 episode stats recap
A look into how much cash and skins have been claimed after 50 episodes of OTB Tour Series Skins
OTB Tour Series Skins on the GK Pro YouTube channel is without a doubt one of the best and most entertaining pieces of disc golf media that you can find. If you’ve never watched the program that started back in 2020 hop over to Youtube and check out one of the fifty episodes that often pays out A-tier level winnings to whoever can snag the most skins. Hosted by Luke Humphries, four professional players compete in an 18-hole skins match with $100 per hole and several other bonuses on the line such as long drives, CTP’s and long putts. Unlike your typical disc golf tournament trash-talking, razzing and showboating are highly encouraged along with running every basket to try and claim an ace pot which currently sits over $9,000. It doesn’t matter how much bonus money you win, make sure to walk away with at least one skin by the end of the round or suffer the shame of being skunked by your competitors. The show has brought about some incredible moments from Kevin Jones’ slip ace at Maple Hill to Calvin Heimburg setting a 30-second timer on Nikko Locastro in Delaware. Early last year OTB reached out to me about compiling some stats for them and as a fan of the show I happily obliged. With fifty episodes now in the books and another season of skins upon us let’s take a look at the stats and examine how much money has been paid out, how many players have been skunked, and even hand out some awards including the most valuable and least valuable player.
Since its inception OTB Skins has paid out a whopping $102,250.00 along with some other prizes like a Nintendo Switch Lite and a very fancy cowboy hat. While skins were worth $100 per hole last year it had previously been $50 per hole in 2020 and there have been special episodes with a ton of added cash like episode #37 at Eagle’s Crossing. Between the added cash, occasional doubles matches and random spectators throwing in $25 or $50 it can be a little tough to keep track of exactly who has won what and how competitors stack up against one another. So for the sake of this post we’re only going to look at the competitors who have played two or more solo rounds and how much cash and skins they have won in those. The table below is sorted by the average number of skins won per round to give us the best indicator of how competitors have performed.
It’s no surprise that the only undefeated players have racked up the most skins per round of the 35 competitors who have participated in more than one solo match. Thomas Gilbert still holds the record for most skins in a single round at 16! Nobody else has ever won more than 14 skins in a match, a feat that has been achieved by Kevin Jones, Calvin Heimburg, Nikko Locastro and the doubles pairing of Kona Panis and Colten Montgomery. If you exclude the insane $5,000 purse that Eagle McMahon won in episode #37, Missy Gannon has the highest average cash won per round at $1,325. Not bad for one round of disc golf. Kevin Jones is both the winningest and most frequent player to appear on the program with 7 wins in 16 solo matches. What’s actually fascinating about that is Kevin has not won a skins match since episode #25 in Jonesboro. At that point he had won 28% of the matches, a stat that 25 episodes later has dropped to 14%. Kevin still owns the title of most wins, most skins won, and just edges out Eagle McMahon for the most cash won at $8,400. Eagle of course has earned more money per round than any player, aided by the huge amount of added cash from the episode at Eagle’s Crossing.
In their first 50 episodes OTB Skins has featured 87 unique competitors and 29 of them have been skunked, that’s 33% of the field. A skunking has occurred in 27 episodes, a staggering 54% of the them! Only twice have there been two skunkings in the same episode. Three players have been skunked twice in solo rounds, Kevin Jones, Emerson Keith and Bradley Williams. Paul Ulibarri has also been skunked twice if you include his doubles round with Big Jerm in episode #11.
Now that we’ve had a chance to look over the numbers, lets hand out some awards
MVP: Missy Gannon
She may only be in two episodes but Missy is everything you want in a skins player, she trash talks as well as anybody who has been on the program and of course she finds a way to push holes and claim skins when given the opportunity. She hasn’t exactly had easy opponents either, of the six competitors Missy has faced she is only rated higher than one of them. Plain and simple, Missy cleans up during a skins match.
LVP: Paul Ulibarri
Uli has cashed in 488 events during his career but he sure does struggle during a skins match. In six solo rounds he has won just six and a half skins, and three of those came in his most recent appearance. If you’re wondering how he earned a half skin, Uli took a courtesy split with James Proctor on the final hole of episode #38 which only adds to the lore of his skunk-iness. If you include his doubles appearance he has been skunked twice and averages less than one skin per round. He also has the lowest average cash per round at $116.67. Not bad pocket change for a round of disc golf, but a little hard to swallow when some players are taking home 10x that amount.
Biggest Ringer: Eagle McMahon
The true definition of a ringer, Eagle claimed just two skins and $150 in his first appearance but has been cleaning up ever since. We’ve discussed his massive $5,000 payout but even taking that away he’s averaging over $1,000 per round in his last three matches. Eagle has won so much money on OTB Skins that Simon Lizotte was pulling out all the stops in Hawk Point to prevent him from taking home any more. Just when Nate Sexton was in prime position to claim some skins that day, Eagle smashed in a putt from 100’ to ultimately skunk the guy who was previously undefeated on the program.
Longest No-Skunk Streak: Calvin Heimburg
Vinny has played in more matches than anybody not named Kevin Jones and even after 11 rounds he is yet to be skunked. Kevin Jones made it through 8 appearances before he was eventually skunked, and James Conrad holds the second longest active streak at 7 matches. It was no surprise when Calvin won the DGPT Match Play Championship last September, he has plenty of practice and performs very well in this format.
Most “This Many” Skins: Cale Leiviska
Cale has won “this many” skins in 2 of his 3 appearances.
